Laxatrol™ Tablets is a stool softener and stimulant laxatives. It works by softening the stool
and increasing water content to allow easier passage of the stool.
Laxatrol™ Tablets is used for: Treating acute constipation. It contains 2 medications: Docusate
Sodium and sennosides. Docusate is known as a stool softener. It helps increase the amount of
water in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Sennosides are known as stimulant
laxatives. They work by keeping water in the intestines, which helps to cause movement of the
intestines.

Take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) as directed
by your doctor. If you are self-treating, follow all directions in the product insert leaflet. If you
are uncertain about any of the information, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Dosage is based on
your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take this
drug more often than directed. Do not take this medication for more than 7 days unless directed
by your doctor. Serious side effects may occur with overuse of this medication (see also Side
Effects section). It may take 6 to 12 hours before this medication causes a bowel movement.
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens, or if bleeding from the rectum occurs. If
you think you may have a serious medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.
Always use Laxatrol™ Tablets exactly as your doctor or health care provider has told you.
Usual Adult Dose for Constipation - Acute
2 to 4 tablets orally daily in divided doses or as a single daily dose preferably in the evening.
Usual Pediatric Dose for Constipation - Acute
2 to 6 years: up to 1 tablet daily.
6 to 12 years: 1 to 2 tablets daily.

Docusate-senna should generally not be used for the treatment of chronic constipation or a
period greater than one week, unless otherwise directed by a physician. Rectal bleeding or
failure to have a bowel movement after senna use may indicate a serious underlying
gastrointestinal condition, and warrants discontinuation of therapy and evaluation.

Some medicines may interact with docusate/sennosides. However, no specific interactions with
docusate/sennosides are known at this time. Ask your health care provider if docusate/
sennosides may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care
provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
Some medical conditions may interact with Laxatrol™ Tablets. Tell your doctor or pharmacist
if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
• If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
• If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary
supplement.
• If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances.
• If you have congestive heart failure, stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, or if you notice a
sudden change in bowel movements that continues for longer than 2 weeks.

for advice before taking Laxatrol™

No studies on the effect on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.

Like all medicines, Laxatrol™ Tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets
them. Stomach/abdominal pain or cramping, nausea, diarrhea, or weakness may occur. If
any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This
medication may cause your urine to turn reddish-brown. This effect is harmless and will
disappear when the medication is stopped.
If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that he or she has judged
that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people who use this
medication correctly do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if any of
these unlikely but serious side effects occur: persistent nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, muscle
cramps/weakness, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, decreased urination, mental/mood changes
(such as confusion).
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical
attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash,
itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include: severe stomach/abdominal pain or cramping, persistent
nausea/vomiting/diarrhea.

Docusate Sodium is an anionic wetting agent, which acts as a faecal softener by lowering the
surface tension and allowing penetration of accumulated hard faeces by water and salts.
Docusate Sodium also possesses stimulant activity.
The sugar moiety of the sennosides is removed by bacteria in the large intestine releasing the
active anthrone function. This stimulates peristalsis via the submucosal and myenteric nerve
plexuses. The tablets act in 8-12 hours.

Docusate Sodium exerts its clinical effect in the gastrointestinal tract. There is some evidence
that docusate sodium is absorbed and is excreted in the bile. There is also evidence that
docusate sodium is capable of enhancing absorption of certain compounds administered
concomitantly.
The action of the sennosides is colon specific and does not depend upon systemic absorption.
