Oral anaesthetic/analgesic
Temporarily relieves occasional minor irritation, pain, sore throat and sore
mouth.

• Adults and children 6 years of age and over: Take 1 lozenge every 2 hours as needed. Allow lozenges to dissolve slowly in the mouth.
• Children under 6 years of age: Consult a doctor or dentist.

Do not exceed recommended dosage.

Allergy Alert: Do not use this product if you have a history of allergy to local
anesthetics such as procaine, butacaine, benzocaine or other “caine”
anesthetics.
Sore Throat Warning: Severe or persistent sore throat or sore throat
accompanied by high fever, headache, nausea and vomiting may be serious.
Consult a doctor promptly. Do not use more than 2 days unless directed by a
doctor.
Stop use and ask a dentist or doctor if:
 sore mouth symptoms do not improve in 7 days
 irritation, pain or redness persists or worsens
 swelling, rash or fever develops
Keep out of reach of children.

Animal studies are insufficient with respect to effects on pregnancy and
lactation. The potential risk for humans is unknown. Therefore Chloraseptic
Sore Throat Lozenges are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Allergic reactions have been reported very occasionally with benzocaine.
There have been occasional reports of temporary breathing difficulty, and
swelling of the face or mouth. Methaemoglobinaemia has been rarely reported
with benzocaine use.

Pronounced reversible local anaesthesia would be observed. No systemic
adverse effects are expected due to the poor systemic absorption, rapid
metabolism and low administered dose of benzocaine.

Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic of the ester type. The mode of action is a
reversible inhibition of the flux of sodium and potassium ions through the
axonal membranes of sensory nerves from peripheral pain receptors. As a
consequence, the depolarisation and propagation of nerve impulses are
inhibited.
The onset of action of benzocaine on mucous membranes is rapid due to the
anaesthetic direct to the site of application with rapid absorption and the
surface analgesic effect. The local anaesthetic activity produced by benzocaine
acting on mucosal membranes is rapid, occurring within one minute and lasts
for 30 – 60 minutes. Chloraseptic Sore Throat Lozenges duration of action
depends on the manipulation and sucking action in the buccal cavity.
Menthol is a covalent organic compound made synthetically or obtained from
peppermint or other mint oils. Menthol's ability to chemically trigger coldsensitive
receptors in the skin is responsible for the well-known cooling
sensation that it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin. It should
be noted that menthol does not cause an actual drop in temperature.

Benzocaine is absorbed into the mucosal membranes. After systemic
absorption, which is negligible, the drug is rapidly metabolised to
p-aminobenzoic acid by plasma esterases. Aminobenzoic acid is excreted
unchanged or conjugated with glycine to aminohippuric acid in the liver, the
metabolites and unchanged benzocaine are excreted in the urine.

No animal data are available on benzocaine tthroat lozenges. Non-clinical
studies on benzocaine showed local irritation, sensation, and
methaemoglobinaemia at high doses in some species.
