1- What DEFONEX is and what it is used for
DEFONEX nasal spray contains mometasone furoate monohydrate which consider as potent corticosteroids.
DEFONEX nasal spray can be used in treatment of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, perennial rhinitis and nasal polyps.

2- Before you use DEFONEX
a- Do not use DEFONEX
• If you are hypersensitive to Mometasone furoate, or any other ingredients of DEFONEX nasal spray.
• If you are suffering from nose infections.
• If you recently had injury or operation in your nose.
b- Take special care with DEFONEX
Check with your physician or pharmacist before using this medicine:
• If you have or have ever had tuberculosis.
• If you have cystic fibrosis.
• If you have herpes simplex of the eye or any other infection.
• If you are taking other corticosteroids (either oral or parental).
• If you contact to a person with measles or chickenpox.
c- Taking other medicines, herbal or dietary supplements
It is recommended to stop any other corticosteroids during treatment with DEFONEX. Stopping of these corticosteroids may cause unwanted effects (joint or muscular pain, weakness and depression) in some people.
Please tell your physician or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without prescription.
d- Taking DEFONEX with food and drink
DEFONEX nasal spray can be used with or without food.
e- Pregnancy
Tell your physician if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
DEFONEX nasal spray should be used only if the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
Ask your physician or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
f- Breast-feeding
DEFONEX nasal spray should be used only if the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

g- Driving and using machines

DEFONEX nasal spray contains Benzalkonium chloride that may cause nasal irritation.

3- How to use DEFONEX
Always use DEFONEX nasal spray exactly as your physician has told you. You should check with your physician or pharmacist if you are not sure. Dosage:
1- For seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial rhinitis
• Adults and children over 12 years old: The usual dose is two sprays into each nostril once daily. The dose can be changed by the physician to be one spray into each nostril once daily (in case of improvement) or to be four sprays into each nostril once daily (in case of no improvement).
• Children 6-12 years old: The usual dose is one spray into each nostril once daily. Long term use of nasal steroids at high doses may cause slowing of growth in children. Checking of child’s height at intervals during treatment is recommended. DEFONEX nasal spray can be used at 2 - 4 weeks before pollen season as a preventive treatment.
2- For nasal polyps
• Adults and children over 12 years old: The usual dose is two sprays into each nostril once daily. The dose can be changed to be two sprays into each nostril twice daily if no improvement observed after 5 – 6 weeks.
Preparing your nasal spray for use
1- Remove outer cap.
2- Shake well before use.
3- Put your forefinger and middle finger either side of the nozzle and your thumb underneath the bottle. Do not pierce the nasal applicator.
4- Point the nozzle away from you and then press down with your fingers to pump the spray. For first time using, prime the bottle by pumping the spray 10 times until a fine mist is produced. If you have not used the spray for 14 days or more, you need to “re-prime” the bottle by pumping the spray 2 times until a fine mist is produced.
5- Gently blow your nose
6- Close one nostril and put the nozzle into the other nostril .
Tilt your head forward slightly, keeping the bottle upright.
7- Start to breathe in gently or slowly through your nose and whilst you are breathing in squirt a spray of fine mist into your nose by pressing down ONCE with your fingers.
8- Breathe out through your mouth.
9- Remove the nozzle from this nostril and breathe out through the mouth. 10- Repeat steps 5-8 for the other nostril.
Cleaning your nasal spray
It is important to clean your nasal spray regularly; otherwise it may not work properly. Remove the dust cap and gently pull off the nozzle. Wash the nozzle and outer cap in warm water and then rinse under a running tap. Do not try to unblock the nasal applicator by inserting a pin or other sharp object as this will damage the applicator and cause you not to get the right dose of medicine. Allow to dry in a warm place. Push the nozzle back onto the bottle and replace the outer cap. The spray will need to be re-primed with 2 sprays when first used after cleaning.
a- If you use more DEFONEX than you should
Ask your physician or pharmacist. Using DEFONEX for a long time may affect some of your hormones.
b- If you forget to use DEFONEX
If you forget to use DEFONEX, use it as soon as you remember then back to the normal schedule.
c- If you stop using DEFONEX
Do not stop using DEFONEX unless your physician tells you to.

4- Possible side effects
Like all medicines, DEFONEX can cause side effect although not everybody gets them.
Tell your physician immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
Rare: immediate allergic reactions, increase in pressure in the eye (glaucoma), cataracts, visual disturbances and damage of the partition in the nose which separates the nostrils.
Very rare: severe allergic reactions, wheezing or problems in breathing. Common: sore nose or throat, sneezing, nose bleeds, headache and alterations in taste or smell which may occur very rarely.
If any of the side effects gets serious or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your physician or pharmacist.
Children: using of corticosteroids at high doses for long time may affect growth hormone in children. It is recommended to check height of child during corticosteroids treatment.

5- How to store DEFONEX
• Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
• Store below 30 ̊ C.
• Do not use DEFONEX after the expiry date which is stated on the outer carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
• Do not use DEFONEX if you notice any visible signs of deterioration.
• Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
• To be used within one month after first opening.
