Riachol belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. An antibiotic is a medicine which is used for the treatment of a variety of infections caused by bacteria. Riachol Ear Drops are used in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections of the outer ear.
Do not use Riachol Ear Drops if:
- you are allergic to Chloramphenicol, or any of the ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- you have a hole in your ear drum.
- you or someone in your family ever had a blood disorder or bone marrow disease including anemia (decrease in the number of red blood cells) when using chloramphenicol in the past.
- you have a family history of “dyscrasias”, a condition which can cause tiredness, bruising and an increased risk of infections.
Warnings and Precautions
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using Riachol Ear Drops:
- If you use Riachol Ear Drops for a long time, your doctor may do some blood tests to check for any problems.
Other medicines and Riachol Ear Drops
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- medicines for cancer such as methotrexate
- medicines for the immune system such as azathioprine
- the dietary supplement chymotrypsin
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
Chloramphenicol should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding unless considered essential by your doctor, as the effects are unknown. If you are a pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Driving and using machines
It is unlikely that after using Riachol Ear Drops your ability to drive and use machines will be affected. However, if you feel unwell you must speak to your doctor before driving or operating machinery.
Always use RIACHOL Ear Drops exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Instructions for use
1. Wash your hands well before use
2. Remove the outer cap on the bottle
3. Insert the nozzle into the affected ear and apply drops as advised by your doctor
4. Repeat in the other ear if you have been told to use Riachol Ear Drops in both ears
5. Replace the outer cap on the bottle, trying not to touch the applicator tip with anything, including the fingers
6. Wash your hands.
How much to use
Three to four drops should be applied into the affected ear up to two to three times daily for up to one week.
Do not use Riachol Ear Drops for more than a one week period unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
If you use more Riachol Ear Drops than you should
Riachol Ear Drops are for external use only. If you suspect someone has swallowed any Riachol Ear Drops, contact your doctor or go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Always take the container with you, if possible, even if empty.
If you forget to use Riachol Ear Drops
Try not to miss doses. If you do miss a dose do not worry, take your next dose at the normal time. Do not use extra drops to make up.
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, RIACHOL Ear Drops can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Stop using your medicine and tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you experience the following side effects:
- Wheeziness (shortness of breath), fever, swelling of your face, lips or tongue, itching or rash with swelling of skin (the rash could be puffy (swollen) or blotchy, or look like little blisters.
- A sore throat, bruising or being unable to overcome an infection. On very rare occasions, patients using chloramphenicol have had changes in their blood cells causing severe tiredness or easy bruising.
Possible side effects include:
- Inflammation of the skin (dermatitis).
Rare side effects include:
- bone marrow depression (a condition where the marrow is unable to produce blood cells)
- a reduced production and death of red blood cells (anaemia)
Long term use of this product can stop it having any effect.
Serious side effects are possible if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant during your course of treatment, stop immediately and consult your doctor.

- Keep out of reach and sight of children.
- This medicine needs to be stored upright between 2-8°C (in a refrigerator). Do not allow it to freeze.
- Once the pack has been opened, the contents should be used within 28 days.
- Keep in the original pack to protect from light.
- Do not use RIACHOL after the expiry date which is stated on the bottle and on the carton the bottle is packed in.
- Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
What RIACHOL contains
The active ingredient is Chloramphenicol 5% w/v. Each 1 ml contains Chloramphenicol (EP) 50 mg.
The other ingredient is propylene glycol.

رياكول ينتمي إلى مجموعة من الأدوية تسمى المضادات الحيوية. المضاد الحيوي هو دواء يستخدم لعلاج مجموعة متنوعة من العدوى التي تسببها البكتيريا. تستخدم قطرة الأذن رياكول في علاج مجموعة واسعة من العدوى البكتيرية في الأذن الخارجية.
لا تستخدم قطرة الأذن رياكول إذا:

على وجه الخصوص، أخبر طبيبك إذا كنت تتناول أيًا مما يلي:
- أدوية السرطان مثل الميثوتريكسيت
- أدوية الجهاز المناعي مثل الآزاثيوبرين
- المكمل الغذائي كيموتريبسين
الحمل والرضاعة والخصوبة
لا يجب استخدام الكلورامفينيكول أثناء الحمل والرضاعة الطبيعية إلا إذا اعتبره الطبيب ضروريًا، لأن التأثيرات غير معروفة. إذا كنتِ حاملاً أو مرضعة، تفكرين أنكِ قد تكونين حاملاً أو تخططين لإنجاب طفل، اسألي طبيبك أو الصيدلي للحصول على المشورة قبل استخدام هذا الدواء.
القيادة واستخدام الآلات
من غير المحتمل أن تتأثر قدرتك على القيادة واستخدام الآلات بعد استخدام قطرة الأذن رياكول.
ومع ذلك، إذا شعرت بتوعك، يجب عليك التحدث إلى طبيبك قبل القيادة أو تشغيل الآلات.
دائما استخدم قطرة الأذن رياكول تماما كما قال لك طبيبك. يجب عليك مراجعة طبيبك أو الصيدلي إذا لم تكن متأكدا.
تعليمات الاستخدام
1. اغسل يديك جيدا قبل الاستخدام
2. قم بإزالة الغطاء من على الزجاجة
3. أدخل الفوهة في الأذن المصابة وقم بوضع القطرات كما نصحك طبيبك
4. كرر في الأذن الأخرى إذا طلب منك استخدام قطرة الأذن رياكول في كلتا الأذنين
5. أعد وضع الغطاء على الزجاجة، محاولاً عدم لمس طرف الفوهة بأي شيء، بما في ذلك الأصابع
6. اغسل يديك.
كمية الاستخدام
يجب وضع ثلاث إلى أربع قطرات في الأذن المصابة حتى مرتين إلى ثلاث مرات يوميًا لمدة تصل إلى أسبوع واحد.
لا تستخدم قطرة الأذن رياكول لأكثر من أسبوع واحد ما لم يخبرك طبيبك بخلاف ذلك.
إذا كنت تستخدم قطرة الأذن رياكول أكثر مما يجب
قطرة الأذن رياكول للاستخدام الخارجي فقط. إذا كنت تشك في أن أحد الأشخاص قد ابتلع أي قطرات من رياكول، فاتصل بطبيبك أو اذهب إلى قسم الحوادث والطوارئ في المستشفى المحلي في الحال. خذ العبوة معك دائمًا، إن أمكن، حتى لو كانت فارغة.
إذا نسيت استخدام قطرة الأذن رياكول
حاول ألا تفوت الجرعات. إذا نسيت جرعة ما فلا تقلق، استخدم جرعتك التالية في الوقت المعتاد. لا تستخدم قطرات إضافية للتعويض.
إذا كان لديك أي أسئلة أخرى حول استخدام هذا المنتج، اسأل طبيبك أو الصيدلي.
مثل جميع الأدوية، يمكن أن تسبب قطرة الأذن رياكول آثارا جانبية على الرغم من أنه ليس كل شخص تحدث له الأعراض.
توقف عن استخدام الدواء وأخبر طبيبك أو الصيدلي على الفور إذا واجهت الآثار الجانبية التالية:
- الصفير (ضيق التنفس)، الحمى، تورم وجهك، الشفتين أو اللسان، الحكة أو الطفح الجلدي مع تورم الجلد (يمكن أن يكون الطفح منتفخًا (متورم) أو بقعًا، أو يشبه بثورًا صغيرة.
- التهاب في الحلق أو كدمات أو عدم القدرة على التغلب على العدوى. في حالات نادرة جدًا، يكون لدى المرضى الذين يستخدمون الكلورامفينيكول تغيرات في خلايا الدم لديهم مما يسبب التعب الشديد أو الكدمات بسهولة.
تشمل الآثار الجانبية المحتملة ما يلي:
- التهاب الجلد (التهاب جلدي).
تشمل الآثار الجانبية النادرة ما يلي:
- كبت النخاع العظمي (حالة يكون فيها النخاع غير قادر على إنتاج خلايا الدم)
- انخفاض إنتاج وموت خلايا الدم الحمراء (فقر الدم)
الاستخدام طويل المدى لهذا المنتج يمكن أن يمنع أي تأثير له.
الآثار الجانبية الخطيرة ممكنة إذا كنتِ حاملاً. إذا أصبحتِ حاملاً أثناء فترة العلاج، فتوقفي فورًا واستشيري طبيبك.
إذا لاحظت أي آثار جانبية غير مدرجة في هذه النشرة، يرجى إخبار طبيبك أو الصيدلي.
- تحفظ بعيدا عن متناول أيدي ونظر الأطفال.
- هذا الدواء يتم تخزينه في وضع رأسي بين 2-8 درجة مئوية (في الثلاجة). لا يسمح بالتجميد.
- بمجرد فتح العبوة، يجب استعمال المستحضر خلال 28 يوماً.
- يحفظ في العبوة الأصلية للحماية من الضوء.
- لا تستخدم رياكول بعد تاريخ انتهاء الصلاحية المدون على العبوة وعلى الكرتون.
- لا تتخلص من أي أدوية عن طريق مياه الصرف الصحي أو النفايات المنزلية. اسأل الصيدلي عن كيفية التخلص من الأدوية التي لم تعد مطلوبة. هذه التدابير تساعد في حماية البيئة.
ماهي محتويات رياكول:
المادة الفعالة هي كلورامفينيكول 5% (وزن/حجم). حيث يحتوي كل 1 ملل على كلورامفينيكول (دستور الأدوية الأوروبي) 50 ملجم.
المكونات الأخرى بروبيلين جليكول.

Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic. It is active against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms, including Salmonella typhi, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Bacteroides fragilis. It has antirickettsial and antichlamydial activity. It is indicated for the topical treatment of bacterial infection of the external ear caused by pathogens, which are sensitive to it.
Chloramphenicol is indicated in adults and children.
Posology
Adults, Children and the Elderly
Apply 3 - 4 drops into the affected ear 2 - 3 times daily for up to 1 week.
Following administration of ear drops patients should be advised to lie down with the affected ear uppermost for a minimum of 10 minutes. After this time cotton wool may be inserted into the ear and normal activities resumed.
Infants
Only use if considered essential by the physician.
Method of administration
For topical use
Avoid use for more than 1 week as this may result in sensitivity to chloramphenicol or the emergence of resistant organisms. Where chloramphenicol ear drops are used on a long term or intermittent basis, it may be advisable to perform a routine blood profile before therapy and at appropriate intervals thereafter to detect any haemopoietic abnormalities.
Bone marrow hypoplasia, including aplastic anaemia and death, has been reported following topical use of chloramphenicol. Whilst the hazard is a rare one, it should be borne in mind when assessing the benefits expected from the use of the compound.
In severe infections topical use of chloramphenicol should be supplemented with appropriate systemic treatment.
Prolonged use should be avoided as it may increase the likelihood of sensitisation and the emergence of resistant organisms.
If any new infection appears during the treatment, the antibiotic should be discontinued and appropriate measures taken. Chloramphenicol should be reserved for use only in infections for which it is specifically indicated.
Excipient Warnings
This medicine contains 0.95g of propylene glycol in 1ml which is equivalent to 95% w/v.
The concomitant administration of Chloramphenicol with other drugs liable to depress bone marrow function should be avoided.
Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
Chloramphenicol may be absorbed systemically following the use of ear drops and may cross the placenta and appear in breast milk. Therefore this product is not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation.

Blood and lymphatic system disorders:
Bone marrow depression and rarely aplastic anaemia has been reported following topical use of chloramphenicol. Whilst the hazard is a rare one, it should be borne in mind when assessing the benefits expected from the use of this compound. Chloramphenicol may ocassionally cause blood dyscrasia.

Accidental ingestion of the drops is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to the low content of the antibiotic in the product. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation or photophobia occur after undesired eye contact, the exposed eye(s) should be irrigated for at least 15 minutes. If symptoms persist after this, an ophthalmological examination should be considered.

Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic with bacteriostatic activity and is effective against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms. It acts by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis.
When used topically systemic absorption is very low. Any chloramphenicol that is absorbed will be widely distributed in the body tissues and fluids. It is found in cerebrospinal fluid, is secreted in saliva, with the highest concentrations occurring in the kidneys and liver.
Chloramphenicol also diffuses across the placenta into the foetal circulation and into breast milk.
Chloramphenicol is excreted chiefly in the urine as the glucuronide with small amounts being excreted via the bile and faeces. It has a reported half life of 1.5 to 5 hours which is increased in patients with liver impairment and neonates to between 24 and 28 hours in the latter.
There is no pre-clinical safety data of relevance to the prescriber, therefore, none is presented in this section.
