For the control of cough due to cold and allergy. VISCODRIL reduces nasal congestion and other congestive symptoms that frequently accompany cough.

For Oral use

ADULTS: 5-10ml 4 times daily.

CHILDRENS: (6-12 years): 5ml 4 times daily

(1-6 years): 2.5ml 4 times daily

Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Contra-indicated during acute asthma attacks, patient receiving MAO Inhibition or CNS Depressants, head injuries and raised intracranial pressure, and in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function. Safety in of VISCODRIL in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.

The use of VISCODRIL may lead to drowsiness and impaired concentration which may be aggravated by the simulations intake of alcohol or other central nervous system depressant

 

agents. Patients should be warned not to drive motor vehicles, operate dangerous machinery or climb dangerous heights as impaired decision making could lead to accidents.

 

Precautions:

 

VISCODRIL has anticholinergic properties and should be used with care in conditions such as glaucoma, urinary retention and prostatic hypertrophy.

It may enhance the sedative effects of the central nervous system depressants including alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives and tranquillizers.

 

Additive anti-muscarinic effects with other drugs of similar properties such as atropine and some anti-depressants.

 

Not to be taken in patients taking mono oxidase inhibitors. Diphenhydramine can inhibit the oxidative metabolism of some drugs. Diphenhydramine may enhance the effects of ephedrine.

Diphenhydramine may mask the response of the skin to allergenic skin tests and also the ototoxic symptoms associated with certain antibiotics.

Do not take VISCODRIL if you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant or are breast- feeding.

VISCODRIL may cause drowsiness. If affected, the patient should not drive or operate machinery.

The most common side effects of VISCODRIL is sedation which can vary from slight drowsiness to deep sleep, and includes lassitude, dizziness, dry mouth. Other side effects include gastro-intestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, anorexia or increased appetite, and epigastric pain.

In infants and children symptoms of Over dosage may include convulsions and hyperpyrexia. In adults symptoms include those mentioned under side-effects.

Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

Diphenhydramine may suppress cough centre (mechanism unknown). Subjective relief of effects of allergic stimuli. Taken at night will assist sleeping.

 

Ammonium Chloride - “Traditional” expectorant. May induce mild acidosis which is counteracted by the excipient sodium citrate.

 

Menthol - Subjective relief of upper respiratory congestion. It retained as thick syrup in buccal cavity and throat provides cooling effect.

 

Sodium citrate - Helps prevent the acidosis associated with ammonium chloride.

Diphenhydramine is a histamine receptor antagonist. Main site of metabolic transformation is the liver.

Oral availability - 50%, Plasma bound - 80%, Half life - 4 hours

 

Ammonium chloride is effectively absorbed from gastrointestinal tract. Ammonium ion is converted to urea by the liver. Acid ion released gives mild metabolic acidosis.

 

Menthol - After absorption, menthol is excreted in the urine and bile as a glucuronide.

Mutagenicity

The results of a range of tests suggest that neither diphenhydramine nor Ammonium chloride have mutagenic potential.

Carcinogenicity

There is insufficient information to determine the carcinogenic potential of diphenhydramine or Ammonium chloride, although such effects have not been associated with these drugs in animal studies.

Teratogenicity

The results of a number of studies suggest that the administration of either diphenhydramine or Ammonium chloride does not produce any statistically significant teratogenic effects in rats, rabbits and mice.

Fertility

There is insufficient information to determine whether diphenhydramine has the potential to impair fertility, although a diminished fertility rate has been observed in mice in one study.
